HomeDevelopers → If preloader is needed or not

Hi,

I'm working on a Flash project, a main film which imports smaller movieclips. My question is if the smaller movieclips weigh about 20kb to 50kb, do you think a preloader is still required for each one? I was going to add a preloader, but not sure it is needed due to the quick loading. The dial-up era seems to be disappearing, so maybe a preloader isn't needed.

Thanks.

Hmm good question.

I'd be tempted to still add at least a flashing Loading graphic for the simple reason that people expect it.

Yes, but doesn't that become just filler? I personally find preloaders annoying when they flash in and out quickly, that is why I was wondering if it is required due to fast internet connections. I dunno.

Thanks for your input.

I think a preloader for a 40kb page might be overkill personally. Those still skating about on dialup are used to the 100kb+ front pages from the likes of http://www.msn.com/ (Total HTTP Requests: 38 Total Size: 114944 bytes) (Thanks http://www.websiteoptimization.com/ )
Thanks for the feedback.

Where is your target market based ?? What people forget is that dial up isn't a fading memory but still quite a reality in many places in the world except North America . I lived in Europe for many years and even on a high speed connection everything moves slower as you have many more people sucking on the same bandwidth straw . Does it matter I have to say yes on that if you intend o people outside of N. America to be viewing it . A good designer thinks about the lowest common denominator . Is it idiot proof !?
